Riding Test

On the Day

 

Arrive well prepared and in plenty of time for your test. At least 15 minutes beforehand.
  The examiner IS looking for the following:Good overall physical control of your bike, no wobbling, good road positioning, awareness of road and traffic and good coordination of primary controls.Timely and appropriate all round observation when moving off, stopping, changing lanes, overtaking and meeting traffic.Be confident in keeping up with flow of traffic if conditions are suitable. Show ability to judge speed and distance of other traffic when pulling out or into a junction. 
  Area's where student may pick up grade 2 faults (blue)or grade 3(Red)Slow to make progress moving off, on the straight and turning left and right,Poor coordination of controls and coarse use of brakes and clutch.
  .  Poor awareness of hazards and other road users and inadequate clearance past
  stationary vehichles or other nearside hazards.

Technical checks
Before you commence the test, the examiner will ask you some technical questions with regard to your bike. Your instructor will go over these with you.
The test
The complete test for bikes lasts approximately 45 minutes and may include the following:
  • Questions on the Rules of the Road at the beginning (including identifying road signs)
  • Demonstrating hand signals
  • 5 manoeuvres, Obstacle Avoidance, Walk Alongside, Slow Ride, U Turn, Emergency
  adjustment of speed.
  • Hill start
  • Riding in a variety of road and traffic conditions
Your riding will be assessed when:
  • Moving off
  • Driving in traffic
  • Starting on a hill
Other Aspects of your riding will include:
  • Road positioning
  • Overtaking and passing other vehicles or road users
  • Anticipation and observation
  • Use of mirrors, signals, lifesavers and shoulder checks
  • Progress and use of Speed
  • Compliance with traffic lights, road signs and markings
  • Use of vehicle controls
